InklingsTalk: C.S. Lewis on Wisdom, Beauty, & Incantation with Cole Matson

May 5, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm EDT

Wisdom, Beauty, & Incantation: C.S. Lewis on the Moral Responsibility of the Christian Artist

Invite a friend! 6pm mass followed by the Inklings Talk in West Chapel

Dr. Cole Matson, former Vice-President of the Oxford C.S. Lewis Society, will take us through the literary criticism and fiction of C.S. Lewis to outline Lewis’ understanding of the moral responsibility of the Christian artist, including the difference between aesthetic and moral goodness, the role of art in the moral education of human beings, and his “three demands” of poetry: Wisdom, Beauty, and Strength of Incantation. While the talk will not focus on one book in particular, if you would like to get a preview, the three most useful books to read in advance would be A Preface to Paradise Lost, An Experiment in Criticism, and Arthurian Torso.

After the Talk, we’ll grab a bite nearby.

This talk is open to everyone. Hope you can join us!
