LitWalk & Lunch: O. Henry and Ludwig Bemelmans, & More!

(Bring enough for lunch at Pete’s Tavern: http://www.petestavern.com/lunch-menu/)

Our first stop is Pauline Books & Media! (store.pauline.org)
A wonderful store with an amazing inventory of books, music, gifts, and more! With a lovely little chapel in the rear of the store, this is a nice place to come to relax and reflect away from the chaos of the city

From there we will head over to Pete’s Tavern for lunch and on our way pass by Herman Melville’s Last Home.

Herman Melville was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet of the American Renaissance period best known for Typee, a romantic account of his experiences in Polynesian life, and his whaling novel Moby-Dick

Pete’s Tavern, previously known as Healy’s Cafe, was a favorite hang out of O. Henry and Ludwig Bemelmans. A plaque placed on the front of Pete’s Tavern in 1999 by the Friends of the Library Association honors O. Henry and Ludwig Bemelmans

O. Henry, was an American short story writer best known for The Gift of the Magi. His stories are known for their surprise endings

Ludwig Bemelmans was an Austro-Hungarian-born American writer and illustrator of children’s books. He is known best for the Madeline picture books

We will stop by Strand Book Store, Forbidden Planet, St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, and a few other places as we make our way to our last stop, Washington Square Park, which was a favorite stopping place of writers, including Robert Louis Stevenson and Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain), who met there in 1888

Seeking imaginative-minded spirits to join us for an informal, convivial journey ☕️
Invite a friend! We look forward to seeing you
