About the Program
Seton Teaching Fellows is a one or two-year postgraduate mission opportunity that brings the living Gospel and the beauty of the Catholic faith to children and families in underserved communities. Fellows rely on both time-tested and innovative methods that help the children and families they serve, as well as their peers, to evangelize with the love of Christ the Teacher. At the same time, they participate in their own holistic formation by accompanying, developing, and challenging each other, striving to serve with the mind, heart, and spirit of Christ the Teacher.
Seton Teaching Fellows was founded as a complement to another Seton program, El Camino: an extended-day faith and enrichment program created to serve children in The Bronx. Since its founding, the Fellows program has grown within The Bronx and beyond to Cincinnati (Oh), Mission (TX), and Paterson (NJ) supporting El Camino as well as various Seton network schools.
Fellows are truly modern-day missionaries, impacting the academic, character, and spiritual development of children in underserved communities—preparing them for college and heaven. As a Fellow, you receive incredible teaching experience in a high-performing school, professional mentorship, and spiritual formation while serving others and living simply in a supportive Catholic community.
About Seton
Co-founded in 2009 by KIPP pioneer Scott W. Hamilton and Teach for America alumna Stephanie Saroki de García, Seton Education Partners is a response to the dramatic decline of urban Catholic schools in America, which have served the economically disadvantaged well for decades.
In 2013, amidst the shuttering of 60+ urban Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of New York, Seton launched Brilla College Prep Public Charter School in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the South Bronx. Brilla, which means “shine” in Spanish, has achieved academic results that parallel the nation’s most acclaimed high-poverty schools. Alongside Brilla, Seton launched El Camino, an optional, privately funded extended-day Catholic faith formation program. In the past decade, over 200 children have been baptized through their participation in El Camino.
Seton is working to take these remarkable achievements to scale by managing a network of schools and programs that ensure that thousands of underserved children whose Catholic schools close—and other local children—have access to an academically excellent, character-building, and, for those who choose it, faith-nurturing education. This network is a national model for how other cities facing the shuttering of Catholic schools can continue to serve children and families with limited educational options. About the position: We’re looking for dynamic, faith-filled leaders who love working with kids, are passionate about serving the poor, and want to help underserved children make it to college and heaven. We’re looking for committed Catholics who want to grow spiritually by living in an intentional faith community. We’re looking for tenacious servants who believe every child can learn and grow in virtue, and are ready to develop into great leaders. We’re looking for people who welcome challenges and are eager to lend their talents to making a dramatic difference in the lives of hundreds of children.
The key responsibilities include:
Working at a Great School:
- Provide classroom support, teach, or work in operations at one of our Seton network schools: either in New York, New Jersey, Ohio, or Texas.
Witnessing the Faith:
- Live in an intentional Catholic faith community that focuses on growing spiritually and living simply.
- Teach faith and character to children in a uniquely vibrant Catholic program: all geographical placements will give Fellows the opportunity to participate in the mission of the New Evangelization.
Qualifications and Desired Characteristics:
- Faith-filled Catholic who seeks God in all things and is called to serve others.
- Core belief that all children can achieve both moral and academic excellence.
- Relentless, results-oriented achiever who is always looking for a better way to improve outcomes for their students.
- Sense of humor.
- Bachelor’s degree.
