Covenant House – New York, NY
Organization:
Founded in 1972, Covenant House New York is the largest nonprofit agency offering comprehensive services to homeless and trafficked youth in New York City. Supported by thousands of individual donors and critical public grants, with an annual operating budget in excess of $21 million, Covenant House New York’s mission is to meet the immediate needs of youth living on the streets and provide them with safe shelter, then guide them across a bridge built of services and support to a future of opportunity and hope. Covenant House New York primarily serves youth ages 16 to 22, including parenting youth within that age range and their children. Each night, more than 250 children and youth sleep beneath Covenant House roofs in New York City, and the agency reaches more than 3,000 unduplicated children and youth annually through its various programs. The agency provides comprehensive supports and growth opportunities designed to meet the unique needs of homeless, runaway and trafficked youth, including educational, vocational, medical, pastoral, behavioral, legal, recreational, artistic, and psycho-social services. Approximately 50 percent of CHNY’s annual budget is privately supported. Covenant House New York provides a continuum of housing options to youth, including no-barrier shelter, transitional housing, supportive housing, and is planning to implement a scattered site independent living apartment program and a major redevelopment of its properties beginning in 2018. In the special circumstances of young trafficking survivors, Covenant House New York operates a safe house to help victims emerge safely and sustainably, stronger and more independent in spite of their exploitation. CHNY emphasizes five core values in its program design: immediacy, sanctuary, choice, value communication and structure. Over the years, the agency has implemented an array of evidence-informed practice models and a broad band of diverse services, from health clinic to vocational courses, to support the work of positive youth development and human transformation that leads young people from homelessness to opportunity and achievement.
