POSITION TITLE: DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
POSITION CONCEPT:
The Director of Special Religious Education assists parishes in the process of developing of developing and maintaining Catechetical Programs or experiences for children, youth and adults with special needs. The Director also assists parishes by providing spiritual support to parents and guardians of persons with disabilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Promotes and awareness in the Church community of the spiritual rights, needs and giftedness of with disabilities;
Assists parishes in implementing the “Guidelines for Meeting the Catechetical Needs of Students with Disabilities” in the Archdiocesan Handbook for Parish Directors and Coordinators of Religious Education, Page A-55
Maintain updated information on special religious education materials, curricula and resources, and assists parish Directors/Coordinators in making the selections appropriate for their programs;
Is available to assess students with special learning needs in order to help determine for them appropriate programming, readiness for sacramental reception and mainstreaming possibilities;
Provides formation and training in Special Religious Education, given in addition to the Catechist Formation Program, through Archdiocesan and regional workshops and individual and group inservice;
Plans and coordinates the annual Special confirmation in St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Pentecost Sunday;
Collaborates as appropriate with the various archdiocesan offices that assist the Blind, the Deaf and Persons with Disabilities, providing referrals as needs;
Communicates with public school administrations, BOCES programs and parents’ organizations to search for children who should be receiving catechesis in their parish programs.
Develops a network of support groups for Catholic parents of children with disabilities, recognizing that these parents often feel cut off from, and neglected by, the Church, and have a great need for help in dealing from a Catholic perspective with ethical issues and sex education.
As a full time staff person fulfills the responsibilities listed for all staff members.
Position Requirements:
Require a Master’s Degree in Special Religious Education and significant theological education, preferable a Master’s in Religious Education or related field.
Bilingual: English-Spanish a plus.
