Primary Responsibility:
This position assists the Director of Accounting of the Department of Education in managing, planning, and coordinating the financial operations of the Child Nutrition Program (CNP) and the Archdiocese of New York Drug Abuse Prevention Program (ADAPP) of the Archdiocese of New York Department of Education. The senior accountant is responsible for the accurate and timely reporting of monthly financial analyses, preparation and distribution of financial information to authorized personnel, overseeing program staff, and assisting with monitoring budgets for the grant programs. In addition, the senior accountant will provide back-up managerial support as needed.
Direct Supervisor: Director of Accounting, Department of Education of Archdiocese of New York
Responsibilities:
- Review monthly bank reconciliations prepared by program staff
- Prepare and upload various monthly allocation entries, including payroll, revenues, and overhead
- Account for accrued expenses, receivables, deferred revenues, donated commodities and other accounts to ensure accurate monthly financial reports
- Review accounts payable vouchers and upload large transactions through the Lawson ERP
- Maintain and record transactions into the general ledger as necessary
- Prepare monthly and year-end financial reports for management
- Assist in developing an annual budget for CNP and ADAPP
- Train and oversee the accounting staff
- Communicate with the directors of the grant programs to understand compliance requirements and be updated on changes in the grant contracts
- Act as the main liaison with the auditors regarding the grant portions of the Department of Education annual financial statements, as well as the A-133 compliance audit
- Assure that policies, practices, methods and procedures conform to the professional standards and to the mission and ethical values of the Archdiocese of New York
Performance Standards;
· Provide accurate and timely budget to actual reports to Director of Accounting and directors of grant programs
- Work effectively with grant program staff to streamline month-end and year-end closings
- Act as liaison to the auditors during the annual financial statement and A-133 compliance audits
Position Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or finance, CPA preferred
- 3 years of diversified accounting with not-for-profit experience (specifically grants accounting) preferred
- Experience in auditing or preparing A-133 compliance audit information
- Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite with special emphasis on Excel
- Extensive knowledge of computer based accounting system (Lawson preferred)
