Talk 2: Penance, Confession, and the Christian Life
What actually is sin, and how does sin damage our relationship with God? Moreover, why are penitential exercises necessary in the Christian life, and how do they—especially the Sacrament of Confession—help us to satisfy (atone) for our sins in union with the saving death of Christ? In this talk, we’ll explore the distinctions between original and actual sin and mortal and venial sin and then consider how penitential works and the Sacrament of Confession help us to atone for and heal from the effects of sin. This will prepare us to take a deep-dive into the inner dynamics of Confession in talk 3.
